Monday Afternoon there was a shooting in the KCK community near ME Pearson Elementary at which time one of the Wyandotte students was injured. We of course are praying for the student.
We are of course paying attention to the impact to the effect it will have on the community. In reaction to the event on Monday there are new security measures in place.
- An additional security officer will be present in the building.
- The sign in procedure has changed and become more detailed.
- The door security has improved.
- The security cameras that did not work now do and there is a monitor in the office that faces the secretaries.
- The school has now increased their ties with the community.
But this morning there has been increased inquiry into the students having their ID's.
Because of some of the new security measures some of the students are actually feeling that the school is under permanent lockdown. Rumors have even surfaced. Some of which has scared some students. The rumor is that if a student is caught without an ID then the Security Officers have the ability to arrest you for trespassing.
After asking if any of the various rumors were true I was assured that it would never happen and that it goes against Wyandotte's belief system. The belief system is that everyone is part of the community. even faculty and students.
Passes that were given out pretty freely are now restricted to emergencies.
But what effect will this have on the library? The ability to go to the library outside of lunch time and before and after school is getting a pass from you teacher.
Could the Wyandotte school area be in danger? Wyandotte has received threats in the past but after recent events students are feeling scared to come to school. There apparently has been a couple of tips that a school shooting might happen on Friday and possibly sometime next week.
Students are afraid to come to school on Friday and with good reason. Another issue is that the Winter Formal dance is Saturday. Even with the increased security there is still a possible chance that something might happen.
So the answer is that it is just heightened security, not a permanent lockdown.
