Laptops: What is new?

Wednesday and Thursday USD 500 handed out laptops to students for the Laptops for Learning program. Other than my new casing on mine (I miss the burrito stains) some things have changed.

The most apparent is the Widget application. For those of you who do not know, widgets are an Apple application that allows you to access personalized information and hold information. There are hundreds of widgets available online at the Apple website. But unbeknownst to me it apparently is unfit for access. Of course there will be a follow up as I get more information.

Not New news
The application Schoolhouse still does not work. Of course this would be a good tool for students as it is an assignment tracker, agenda, and teacher connect. Very good for students, if it worked. it seems that USD 500 still worries more about blocking websites for money than getting applications to run.

Another hip hip hooray for (Amanda) Tapping's birthday.

After graduation Tapping continued to study theatrical arts while performing in several stage productions. She appeared in several television commercials and played a variety of roles in television and film productions, such as The Outer Limits and The X-Files. She also formed a comedy troupe, the "Random Acts", with collaborators Katherine Jackson and Anne Marie Kerr, in Toronto in the early 90s[3].
Tapping is best known for her portrayal of Samantha Carter in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, which debuted in 1997. After SG1 aired its final episode, Tapping reprised the role of Samantha Carter on Stargate Atlantis as the new commander of the Atlantis expedition.[4]. In season five however, Tapping's role on the show was reduced to that of "special guest-star" with only occasional appearances[5] due to Tapping choosing to focus her attention on the development of a new series for the SCI FI Channel called Sanctuary. The show consisted of 13 episodes which expanded on an original show released on the internet in 2007 as a series of eight "webisodes", where the bulk of the scenery and characters are entirely green screen and CGI creations. Tapping serves as both star and executive producer of the show.
In 2007, Tapping won a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Actress for her role in the short film Breakdown.

Comic Con for me

I did not attend Comic Con 2009 of course but I did keep my eyes and ears at the ready to hear what is being announced. this is to highlight what I am excited about for the coming future.

Stargate Universe
Before I was skeptic as to whether Stargate Universe would help the franchise or hurt it. During Comic Con two trailers were released showing different sides of the show. Both have now strengthened my resolve in the series being the best that we have seen.

Alice In Wonderland
Tim Burton announced and released concept art pretty recently of his latest remake. Alice In Wonderland. The good thing is at Comic Con, there was a trailer. after seeing the trailer I am sure that it wil be awesome and I will be attending opening night.

Avatar
James Cameron finally did it. Avatar The Last Airbender has finally been announced as a movie production. I myself have not been big into the Avatar show But I am excited to see how he does it.

Honorable mentions
These following showcases are somewhat important to me but are not huge announcements.

District 9
THis tale of Alien refugees that are detained by the government. It's like the whole civil rights thing ever again. Ever since the early announcments last fall I have been keeping my eyes open for any District 9 news.

Ben 10: Alien Force
Season 3 is on its way this fall. It has been confirmed at this years Comic Con. The most popular Cartoon Network franchise since the Code lyoko series will be recieving a third season set to air sometime this fall.

Caprica
The only reason this one is getting mentioned is because of the release date change. When the trailer premiered during the Battlestar Galactica finale this show created a lot of buzz especially pertaining to the effect on the BSG storyline. it was originally set for spring/summer 2010 it has had its date moved to January 22, 2010.

Chris Drummond: One Day

The world may need to watch out for Indie artists. They are on the rise and Kansas City musician Chris Drummond is no different.

High school student Chris Drummond has always loved music. He started out early as a member of a KC garage band named Thunder Muffin. After a few steady years Chris broke off and went solo for a while. Although this is usually how a music career can end it was just the beginning of the Newest Chapter:

One Day

One day is the first album made by Chris and he is very proud of it. The entire 10 minute album was made on one day. And that was not just the recording. Writing to completion it was a one day test to see if it could happen. And it did.

The first track on the album, "Piranhaz" reminds me of the Dawn Landes song "Straight Lines" in the fact that both have an Indie sound to it and that is what Attracted me. Other than that it is a mellow song and sets a tone for most of the album.

The rest of the album has a similar sound to it. The songs are pretty mellow until you get to the track "Fuck Drugs". This is more of a quickstep song about how to say no to drugs. (Maybe the AD council and the DEA need to play this song)

In short: This is a wonderful 10 minutes of your life and sets the bar for Indie/Garage bands very high. You can e-mail Chris Drummond at drummerboy45884@yahoo.com

(Note: Ask him if he still has the song "Space Cows" it is an awesome song)
